Hello, and welcome to African Histories, a space dedicated to exploring, understanding, and sharing the multifaceted narratives of the African continent and its people. My name is Dr. Maysa Espíndola Souza, a historian specializing in African studies. Having recently defended my doctoral thesis in January 2024, I find myself at the beginning of an exciting post-doctoral journey in Geneva, Switzerland. This blog and accompanying website are born out of a passion for African Studies and a firm belief in the power of dialogue and education to foster understanding and appreciation of the diverse cultures, histories, and experiences that shape this vast continent.

Throughout my academic career, I’ve been driven by a curiosity to uncover and share stories that are often overlooked or misunderstood in mainstream historical discourse. My journey has not only been an academic pursuit but also a personal quest to bridge gaps in knowledge and understanding. Moving to Geneva for my post-doc position has opened new horizons for me, both professionally and personally, and I am eager to embark on this academic journey, I view this platform as my passport to the world of shared knowledge, where each post, discussion, and exchange adds a stamp of insight, understanding, and connection across borders.

As I presented years of research and insights into African historical narratives, my advisor likened the completion of my doctorate to acquiring a passport—an analogy that resonated deeply with me. This “passport” wasn’t just a culmination of academic achievements; it symbolized the beginning of a broader journey into the world of academia, research, and dialogue.
